JEAN-PIERRE MELVILLE IN MELBOURNE .....AND SYDNEY

This note is being sent out to the largely Sydney-based Cinema Reborn subscription list in the hope that some among you may alert your friends in Melbourne of the splendid Jean-Pierre Melville season starting this weekend 13 & 14 June at the Elsternwick Classic and Hawthorn Lido cinemas. Who can think of a better way to emerge from the latest lockdown. Just remember to pass on Bruce Beresford’s instructions on how to attend a Melville movie.

The program is the same six films, in the same order, restored by StudioCanal and presented in association with CINEMA REBORNthat screened in Sydney last October at the Randwick Ritz. Screenings are on Sunday afternoons at the Classic and on Monday evenings at the Lido.

Two of the highlights of the Sydney Melville screenings, RED CIRCLE and UN FLIC have been picked up for repeat business at Sydney’s Golden Age Cinema in Surry Hills. They are part of a series of modern and classic noirs, thrillers and other titles described by the cinema as “Dark desires, shady figures and girls with guns. This series zigs and zags through films that explore the shadowy side of life. From classic Hollywood noirs to free-form French New Wave creations and the paranoid 1970s visions of New Hollywood Cinema, all the way to slick 1980s neo-noir and the bombastic crime capers and erotic thrillers of the 1990s, join us every weekend in winter as we pay a playful tribute to the booze hounds, femme fatales, shaggy dogs and private eyes of cinema.”
