ON THE TELLY
NITV Thursday 930pm: Ivan Sen’s Beneath Clouds (2002). Two Australian teenagers, Lena (Dannielle Hall) and Vaughn (Damian Pitt), reluctantly team up on the road. Simple, complex and beautiful.
9Gem 3.30pm Saturday: The Big Country (1958) Epic, starry, slightly cool, but expertly made western about a feud over water rights. Gregory Peck unstiffens; Jean Simmons is loveable; Burl Ives is nasty; Franz Planer’s lensing is exquisite, and Jerome Moross’s score splendid. Record it and speed through the abundance of seniors-centric commercials.
