Piccoli was born in 1925 and made 233 appearances in films and on television. A legendary figure of the French Cinema he appeared in films by dozens of directors major and minor. Among the majors were Jean Renoir, Luis Bunuel, Paul Vecchiali, Jacques Rozier, Jean-Pierre Melville, Rene Clement, Jean-Luc Godard, Costa-Gavras, Alain Resnais, Agnes Varda, Henri-Georges Clouzot, Jacques Demy, Alfred Hitchcock, Marco Ferreri, Claude Sautet, Claude Chabrol, Bertand Tavernier, Marco Bellocchio, Louis Malle, Ettore Scola, Claude Lelouch,Jerzy Skolimowski, Yousef Chahine, Leos Carax, Jacques Rivette, Manoel De Oliveira, Raul Ruiz, Theo Angelopoulos and Nanni Moretti. He also directed five films.
