A new site for quality film reviews - David Stratton advises of the creation of THE FILM VERDICT

Among the first reviews from Venice, Rhino
(Olah Senstov, Ukraine, 2021)

May I draw the attention of Film Alert’s readers to the arrival of a new website Click for the link here: The Film Verdict.com

Those involved are all former writers for Variety or The Hollywood Reporter – Jay Weissberg, Deborah Young, Boyd van Hoij among them.  There are only reviews of foreign language films, nothing more, but the content is excellent.

Here's the opening welcome message from the Editor and Publisher:

We are delighted to welcome you to The Film Verdict. Encouraged by many of you in the international film community to create a dedicated all-review website, that is a platform featuring reliable, independent reviews from the most experienced film critics in the industry, with a strong focus on the festivals where new international films debut.

We have chosen to “soft-launch” The Film Verdict at the Venice Film Festival while we continue to develop and evolve the website into a dynamic platform. Our registered readers will have free access to an unprecedented number of reviews of new films bowing at Venice, Karlovy Vary, Sarajevo, San Sebastian, El Gouna, Carthage, Cairo, Red Sea, Tokyo, London, Tallinn, IDFA and Rotterdam, even before the Verdict’s official launch at the Berlinale in February.

Our renowned critics share the conviction that the international film business requires more, not less, coverage of films from around the world. We strongly believe in a cinematic world that knows no borders and where smaller film festivals play an equally important role in showcasing and promoting talent and quality, as the major film festivals and markets. Our editorial commitment is to treat all the films we review with respect and professionalism, as guaranteed by our reviewers’ signatures. Please encourage our efforts by registering here and to gain free access of the website and all its reviews six months and to follow our progress up to our official launch in Berlin, when the site will become subscription-only.

We believe that our choice to start an all-new, all-review platform will be supported by the industry and the international film community, who will find a dynamic site of quality independent reviews guaranteed by critics of repute. Just as we listened to the film community for our launch of The Film Verdict, we continue to welcome your ideas and suggestions for building a friendly home for world cinema.

Deborah Young,

Eric Mika,
