Cinema Reborn October Newsletter - Bruce Beresford and THE TRAVELLERS, New York and Lyon restorations, Dates for for 2026, Charitable Donations

BRUCE BERESFORD AND THE TRAVELLERS

Film-maker Bruce Beresford has had a long relationship with Cinema Reborn. Few who witnessed it will forget his Alain Delon impersonations when he introduced Jean-Pierre Melville’s films, first in our 2020 post-Covid Melville season at the Ritz and later when we screened Le Samourai. Cinema Reborn screened Bruce’s preferred director’s version of one of his finest films Tender Mercies back in 2023.

Bruce’s first film in seven years, after his hit Ladies in Black,  is now in cinemas around Australia. It has a star turn from Brian Brown in a lead role. In a recent post on Arts Hub Bruce talked to critic Stephen A Russell about his career and his new film. It’s screening everywhere including at Cinema Reborn’s homes at the Randwick Ritz and the Hawthorn Lido.

NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL REVIVALS

Ombres de Soie, Mary Stephen, France, 1978
Screening at NYFF

There is ever growing interest in reviving the history of the cinema and among the best selections made each year are those at the New York Film Festival. A couple of the films have already had recent screenings in Australia (though one of them was screened in a terrible copy that was clearly not the restored version). Cinema Reborn has several of these titles in our sights for 2026 and we’ll be hoping for the best in our negotiations with producers, archives and distributors. Click on this link for another report.

LUMIÈRE FESTIVAL (LYONS, FRANCE) CLASSICS

For 16 years, the Lumière festival has been supporting cinema of the past and present by honouring its history, its diversity and those who endeavour to preserve it.

The Lumière Classics label showcases the finest restorations of 20th-century films, presented exclusively at the festival in the ‘New Restorations’ section, as well as under other festival categories. It highlights the vital work that archives, film libraries, rights holders and foundations undertake to ensure the continued vitality of the world’s cinematographic heritage.
