Hello Everyone
We’ll be sending out two Cinema Reborn newsletters this month. The second will be sent around 14 March to advise you that our full program is online and bookings are open via the Randwick Ritz website. You’ll have all the titles, notes on the films and all the links necessary.
So what do we have in store.
All up we’ll be screening our biggest program ever from Wednesday 26 April to Tuesday 2 May. There will be twenty-nine sessions showing sixteen features and three shorts. Our program is drawn from nine countries and five continents. One of the films to be screened is our longest ever at 3 hours 36 minutes, two of them were multiple Oscar winners and one was the film that caused the Academy to institute a new Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
In the meantime, just to give a hint if you have been attending the screenings of the 4K restorations of Krysztof Kieslowski’s THREE COLOURS TRILOGY at the Ritz with each film there is a trailer for one of the films we’ll be screening at Cinema Reborn 2023.
Irene Jacob Three Colours Red |
THREE COLOURS RED
The final film in the Trilogy is RED, starring Irene Jacob. Jacob follows on from Juliet Binoche in BLUE and Julie Delpy in WHITE to form a remarkable composite of acting performances for Kieslowski’s last films as director. It screens at the Ritz on Saturday 4 March at 6.30 pm. For bookings click here
The highly esteemed American critic Jonathan Rosenbaum has called it the best of the three. It’s an incandescent meditation on fate and chance, starring Jacob as a sweet-souled yet sombre runway model in Geneva whose life dramatically intersects with that of a bitter retired judge, played by Jean-Louis Trintignant. Meanwhile, just down the street, a seemingly unrelated story of jealousy and betrayal unfolds. Red is an intimate look at forged connections and a splendid final statement from a remarkable filmmaker at the height of his powers.
Each of the films is introduced by a speaker from a panel convened by Cinema Reborn Organising Committee member Angelica Waite. RED will be introduced by Janice Tong.
Janice by day is the managing director for a tech media company, and by night a cinephile whose thesis was on love, time and memory in the films of Wong Kar-wai. Janice has published work in a number of books and journals, including Chinese Films in Focus II, Contretemps, and Senses of Cinema. Her blog, Nightfirehorse, covers a range of films and auteurs.
CINEMA REBORN CHARITABLE DONATIONS
To assist our forthcoming program Cinema Reborn has received a number of substantial donations to support the acquisition of our program. Fees and rights for our films represent the bulk of our expenditure. In 2023 a number of films are already designated as being supported by various individuals, institutions and government bodies. If you are of a mind to donate an amount that would cover the cost of one of our films we would be delighted to acknowledge your generosity in our printed catalogue pages for that film, and on our website.
Cinema Reborn is an organisation devoted exclusively to exploring the Cinema's heritage. It is managed and organised by a group of dedicated film professionals here working solely on a voluntary basis to assemble an annual selection of cinema classics from around the world.
Cinema Reborn has relied, since its inception, on the generosity of donors who support our aims and are committed to the annual project of bringing cinema classics back to a big screen in perfect new digital copies. Without such support the event could not be presented.
