Celebrating Federico Fellini - an 8 Film retrospective at the Randwick Ritz and the Elsternwick Classic begins on 6 July.

Federico Fellini
The best laid plans can go astray. Cinema Reborn’s plans for its 2020 season at the Randwick Ritz,  Elsternwick Classic and the ARC Cinema in Canberra were to include two sessions designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Federico Fellini.

The plan was for novelist, biographer, film-maker and critic John Baxter to return to Australia to present a program dedicated to the memory of the Italian master. In each city John Baxter would be in conversation with a critic or expert – in Sydney Jason Di Rosso, in Melbourne Phillipa Hawker and in Canberra Karina Libbey.

Audiences would hopefully get a vivid portrait of the film-maker, his life and work. Much would have been drawn from Baxter’s friendship with Fellini, an acquaintance developed during the course of preparing the most recent and only authorized biography of the director published in English. The conversation was to be followed by the Australian premiere of Fellini vs Visconti: Italian Standoff,a remarkable documentary made by Marie-Dominique Montel and Christopher Jones devoted to the decades-long feud between Fellini and his artistic rival Luchino Visconti.  John Baxter woud also introduce digitally restored screenings of Fellini’s 1957 classic Nights of Cabiria  at in Sydney and Melbourne and a screening on 35mm of La Strada in Canberra.

The Cinema Reborn screenings would have then timed nicely with a retrospective of 8 key titles from Fellini’s filmography that was planned to be presented at the Ritz and the Classic following the Cinema Reborn 2020 season. Now that the lockdown is drawing to an end and cinemas are re-opening, the Ritz and Classic have revived their Fellini plans and will start screening a film in their Fellini seasons weekly from 6 July. Session times have just been announced for both cinemas. You can find a link below. Click on any image for a slide show.
