ON THE TELLY
Monday 8.30pm & Tuesday Noon Fox Classics: The French Connection (1971)– Gene Hackman plays an unpleasant undercover policeman in this gripping, gritty thriller about the busting of a narcotics ring run by Fernando Rey (excellent). Justifiably famous for its chase sequence below and on the elevated NYC subway.
Thursday 8.30pm & Friday Noon Fox Classics: The Maltese Falcon (1941) – excellent noir, directed by John Huston. Detective Humphrey Bogart tussles with a fascinating collection of villains (Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre), who are backstabbing each other over a priceless sculpture. Wordy, but rich in sub-text and character complexity.
Saturday 3pm 9Gem: Ski Party (1965) –Frankie Avalon leaves the beach for the ski slopes (but with Deborah Walley instead of Anette Funicello). The only reason to record this dated collegiate farce is to see James Brown (and His Famous Flames) cavorting in lurid Fairisle knitwear. Get on up!
Saturday 10.30pm & Sunday Noon Fox Classics: His Girl Friday (1940) - rapid-fire, black farce. Newspaper editor, Cary Grant, tries to woo back ace reporter, Rosalind Russell, to cover a murder case. All concerned at the top of their form.
