So...If You Are In The Neighborhood
Its barely thirteen years since Bong Joon-ho leapt to serious international prominence
with his second feature Memories of
Murder. Now, already, the film has been restored and the first screenings picked up and noted by the cinephile sleuth Simon are in Lyon, France. Details here at the Lumiere Cinemas.
Warner Bros have waited a little longer before doing a makeover of Clint Eastwood’s major western Unforgiven. The Film Forum in New York is advertising a 25th Anniversary 4K restoration. Details here. The Film Forum is also advertising a DCP restoration, possibly straight from its Bologna outing, of Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blowup.
Also screening in Bologna were a
number of restorations of the films of Jean Vigo including both his
masterpieces Zéro de Conduite (1933) and
L’Atalante (1934). Now they are also screening in Lyon and no doubt will travel
around the world over the next year or so. Details here. Bologna also had a program presented by Bernard Eisenschitz which examined the L'Atalante out-takes and which was reported upon by David Hare here. Cinephilia rampant.
One final anniversary is also being
celebrated at the Cremorne Orpheum which has a 4K restoration of Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element to
celebrate the film’s twentieth birthday. Click on the link for session times.
