Ingmar Bergman & Ingrid Bergman on the set of Autumn Sonata |
There has been a growth in the number of operas
being based on movies - think of EXTER-MINATING ANGEL, and MARNIE for starters.
I have just watched a production from Finnish
Opera of an opera based on Ingmar Bergman's Autumn Sonata with Anne Sofie von Otter in the role
originally played by Ingrid Bergman. And most impressive it was. (Click on the images below to enlarge.)

Anne Sofie von Otter, Autumn Sonata |
Particularly striking was the use of the chorus -
we first meet them as the audience at one of Charlotte's piano recitals,
praising her warmth and humanity and insight, and their comments on this
throughout the opera are an effective counterpoint to the way we realise
Charlotte has sacrificed all her real humanity to pursue her career.

If
you're interested, it's streaming and free with EST at this link, Autumn Sonata, until
mid-March. Apart from this I don't know anything about the young composer
Sebastian Fagerlund.
